FEATURED SERVICES

Little Giants Killara is a Premium Child Care Centre located on the North Shore suburb of Killara. We believe a solid early learning foundation is one of the greatest gifts we can give our children, with benefits that will be reaped by generations to come.

By embracing the invaluable opportunity of the early years, we aim to instil life-skills that will not only ensure your children’s successful transition to school, but empower them to become confident, positive and responsible citizens of tomorrow.

Little Giants incorporates a series of shared rituals into our daily routines to help provide children with a sense of security, identity and belonging. These special times include Tea Time, Relaxation circles and progressive meals.

We also offer Forest School for our 3-5 year olds. This internationally renowned program enables children to freely explore and experience the wonders of nature while developing a strong sense of respect and understanding for our environment and the importance of its sustainability. The children go to the local National Park on weekly visits for their Forest School.

In our commitment to continuing community connections our children of all ages participate in excursions and community walks. We also offer Chinese lessons with one of our very own teachers.

Our center caters for children from birth to school age and is open from 6:30am to 6pm Monday to Friday 52 weeks a year.
Now is the time to ignite their spirit of learning.
Book a tour today to discover why Little Giants Killara is raising the bar in Early Childhood Education.  Contact us for more information.

Glenaeon Rudolf Steiner School Playgroups  ‘Welcome Home’ Playgroups are suitable for children from birth to 4 years.

Glenaeon offers a range of family-style playgroups which are joyful, nurturing and supportive of the young child’s developmental stages. The intention is to nourish the body and soul through activities and interactions that capture the imagination and allow parents and their children to enjoy a good time together.

Each Playgroup meets once a week and is led by an experienced Early Childhood Educator who guides the group through a two-hour session that includes stories and songs, circle activities and free-play both indoor and out. The activities and stories reflect the seasons of the year with baking and craft a cornerstone of the program. A shared morning tea is provided and children take home skills for crafting life from domestic arts and sciences such as toy making, kitchen and garden alchemy. Our Playgroup room is furnished with quality wooden and handmade toys while the natural bush playground is a haven for exploration and active tactile play. Playgroups are a great learning experience for children, parents and grandparents and are tailored to meet the needs of the group.

Parents benefit from the maturity, wisdom and experience of the playgroup educators who share ideas for nurturing the young child at home and overcoming some challenges of 21st century parenting. New skills are acquired while connections and friendships are made among children and adults.

Playgroups Leader Sandra Frain is a professional Educator with four decades of experience creating dynamic and tailored educational programs for children and their families in a unique celebration of life.

You are warmly invited to join our Welcome Home Playgroup.

Prof. Pasi Sahlberg To Debate The Power Of Play In Nature

Eminent Finnish educator Professor Pasi Sahlberg will be keynote speaker at a free public forum on the Power of Play in Nature at The Concourse, Chatswood on Thursday 5 March.

Sahlberg is the former Secretary-General of Education in Finland, author of two books on the Finnish educational success story, and now Professor of Education at the Gonski Institute at the University of NSW.

His latest book, Let the Children Play, is a powerful research-based argument for more play in Australian schools.

Joining him as guest speaker at the Glenaeon Rudolf Steiner School sponsored forum will be Professor Tonia Gray from Western Sydney University who has devoted the majority of her academic career to examining the interrelationship of people, nature and wellbeing.

She argues that in the last few decades, society has become estranged from the natural world, mainly due to our busy urban lives and our love affair with technological devices.

“Contrary to the belief we Aussies are a nature-loving outdoor nation, research suggests we’re spending less and less time outdoors. This worrying trend is also becoming increasingly apparent in our schools and other educational settings,” Gray says.

Yet the evidence is that play in nature can enhance creativity, bolster mood, lower stress, foster social skills, improve mental acuity, wellbeing and productivity.

So, why don’t our schools do more?  This free public forum will consider what schools, and parents, can do to address what US author and researcher Richard Louv has called NDS or Nature-Deficit Syndrome.

This important public forum for parents and educators will consider how we can all do more to address the many educational benefits that play in nature can foster.

Head of Glenaeon Rudolf Steiner School, Andrew Hill, host of the seminar says, “In a time of environmental crisis, it’s even more urgent for our children to build a sense of earth stewardship, a sense of care and responsibility for the planet.”

MC at the forum will be Lucy Clark, Associate Editor at The Guardian, and author of Beautiful Failures, a commentary on the Australian education system.

Prof. Pasi Sahlberg, Prof. Tonia Gray and Lucy Clark will be available for book signing after the forum.

PARENT INFORMATION

Kids and Poisons

In New South Wales, every year thousands of children need medical care for poisoning from products commonly found in and around the home. Most accidental poisonings occur to children younger than five, with children aged one to three at greatest risk.

Why are children more likely to be poisoned?

Young children are exploring their world and will put anything in their mouths. They also like to imitate what others do, including taking medications.

What can be poisonous to your child?

Medicines, cleaning, laundry, gardening and car products, insecticides, perfumes, paint, plants, insects and many others.

How can you prevent a poisoning?

  • Store medicines and chemicals out of sight and reach of children, at least 1.5 metres off the ground and in a locked child resistant container.
  • Use medicines and chemicals safely. Follow given instructions and return them to safe storage immediately after use.
  • Buy products in child resistant containers and use child resistant locks on cupboards or cabinets that store poisons. You can buy these at many hardware stores.
  • Ensure all products are stored in original containers and are clearly labelled. Regularly dispose of unwanted and out of date medicines by taking them to your nearest pharmacy for safe disposal.
  • Don't call medicines 'lollies'.
  • Check that the plants in your garden are not poisonous
For more information on the prevention of poisoning, call Kids Health, The Children's Hospital at Westmead on (02) 9845 3585.
